Independent Learning Programme 2018
Multiplex established the Independent Learning Programme with 6 secondary schools and 70 pupils from the West of Glasgow. The ILP is a 12 week secondary schools programme with the teams from each school given the a Learning & Teaching Hub project brief tasked with “bidding for the job”. They were tasked with creating a construction company, assigning roles to each other, researching and answering the employers requirements. Each team was assigned a mentor from Multiplex, University of Glasgow or Careys to support them through the process.
The aims of the ILP is to develop employability, communication, and teamwork skills of the pupils involved; providing access to the construction industry as a means of learning and as a potential career path; and also to have the pupils involved in the University of Glasgow and showcase what university life has to offer.
For the final event, each team delivered a 10 minute presentation to a panel of judges made up of Peter Haggerty (RICS), David Greig (HLM), Kate Powell (SRC President), Lucy Black (Construction Scotland Innovation Centre) and Abigail Kinsella (GCC Education Services). All pupils taking part received a certificate and Amazon voucher but it was John Paul Academy that won the trophy.
